DESCRIPTION
Play this online game named van der Waals Z factor.
The compressibility factor (Z), also known as the compression factor or Z factor, is the ratio of the molar volume of a gas to the molar volume of an ideal gas at the same temperature and pressure. It is a thermodynamic property that is used to modify the ideal gas law to account for the real gas behavior.
Compressibility factor values are usually obtained by from equations of state (EOS), such as the van der Waals EOS.
In thermodynamics, the reduced properties of a fluid (reduced pressure and reduced temperature) are a set of state variables normalized by the fluid's state properties at its critical point
According to van der Waals, the theorem of corresponding states (or principle of corresponding states) declares that all fluids, when compared at the same reduced temperature and reduced pressure, have the same compressibility factor and all deviate from ideal gas behavior to about the same degree.
The compressibility factor at the critical point predicted by van der Waals EOS is 0.375
