Stamp duty in India varies from State to State, ranging from 3 percent to 10 percent. It is levied on the transaction value or circle rate/ready reckoner rate/collector rate (minimum price of property fixed by the state government), whichever is higher.

Certain factors such as the location of the house, age, and gender of the property owner, and usage of the property (commercial or residential) defines the actual stamp duty value.

For example, if a male homebuyer purchases a house worth Rs 50 lakh in Delhi where the stamp duty rate is 6 percent, he has to pay Rs 3 lakh as stamp duty while a female homebuyer needs to pay Rs 2 lakh, who enjoys a two percent rebate on stamp duty.
