NATUNA DISTRICT is one of the districts in the Riau Islands Province, Indonesia. Natuna is the northernmost archipelago in the Karimata strait. To the north, Natuna is bordered by Vietnam and Cambodia, to the south by South Sumatra and Jambi, to the west by Singapore, Malaysia, Riau and to the east by East Malaysia and West Kalimantan. Natuna is on the international shipping lanes of Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. This district is famous for producing oil and gas. The history of Natuna Regency cannot be separated from the history of the Riau Islands Regency, because before it was independent as an autonomous region, Natuna Regency was a division of the Riau Islands region. Natuna Regency was formed based on Law no. 53 of 1999 which was ratified on October 12, 1999, with the inauguration of the Regent of Natuna, Drs. H. Andi Rivai Siregar by the ad interim Minister of Home Affairs General Faisal Tanjung in Jakarta. When it was formed, it consisted of 6 sub-districts namely East Bunguran, West Bunguran, Jemaja, Siantan, Midai and Serasan Districts and one Tebang Ladan Sub-district.

Along with the authority of regional autonomy, Natuna Regency then expanded the sub-district area which until 2004 became 10 sub-districts with the addition of Pal Matak, Subi, North Bunguran and Pulau Laut sub-districts with a total of 53 sub-districts/villages.

Until 2007, Natuna Regency has 16 sub-districts. The 6 new division sub-districts include Pulau Tiga, Northeast Bunguran, Central Bunguran, South Siantan, East Siantan and East Jemaja sub-districts with a total of 75 sub-districts/villages.
