The Scarlet Letter is a novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne published in 1850 and considered his peak work. It is set in the Puritan New England of the early seventeenth century, and tells the story of Hester Prynne, a woman accused of adultery.

In June 1642, in the Puritan city of Boston, a crowd gathers to witness the punishment of Hester Prynne, a young woman convicted of adultery and sentenced to wear an "A" scarlet of adulteress in her dress for her shame. The sentence forces him to remain for three hours in the pillory exposed to public humiliation. Despite pressures to confess the name of his daughter's father, Hester refuses.

Hester's husband, who had long been missing at sea, appears in time to witness the punishment and learn of his wife's adultery. Enraged, he pretends to be doctor Roger Chillingworth to try to discover his wife's lover.
