GreekRomanMyths reviews Greek and Roman Mythology. Greek mythology was not the static pageant that we learned in school, or read inBulfinch. It did not spring forth fully formed but evolved out of a set of ancient local deities. The Greek goddesses emerged from native Pelasgian tutelary spirits, and much of the male pantheon was imposed by Indo-Europeans.

Greek mythology is the body of myths originally told by the ancient Greeks, concerning the origin and nature of the world, the lives and activities of deities, heroes, and mythological creatures, and the origins and significance of the ancient Greeks' own cult and ritual practices. It was a part of the religion in ancient Greece and has had an extensive influence on the culture, arts, and literature of Western civilization and remains part of Western heritage and language. Modern scholars refer to and study the myths in an attempt to shed light on the religious and political institutions of Ancient Greece and its civilization and to gain an understanding of the nature of myth-making itself.

Greek mythology is explicitly embodied in a large collection of narratives, and implicitly in Greek representational arts, such as vase-paintings and votive gifts. Poets and artists from ancient times to the present have derived inspiration from Greek mythology and have discovered contemporary significance and relevance in the themes.
