India is a world leader in the production of several food/ agricultural commodities. However, due to the perishable nature of the agricultural produce, it suffers post-harvest losses on account of insufficient post-production processing facilities and technologies.
A study reported by CIPHET, Ludhiana estimated that the post-production losses in food commodities are up to 100,000 crores per annum. Further, post-harvest loss ranges from 4.58-15.88% of the production in extremely perishable fruits and vegetables.
These losses are anticipated to be reduced by introducing scientific innovations and technical interventions through this mobile app to even the small-scale producers of these commodities who can potentially start the cottage food processing industry as the food processing sector is also referred to as the Sunrise sector.
Thus, it may ensure enhanced shelf life of the perishable food commodities, besides adding value to the produce, product diversification, generation of self-employment, and increasing farmers income.
