THE DSR: AN AMAZING LITERARY ENTERPRISE AND JOURNEY OF GRACE


It has been an epistolary expedition and enterprise of many years for the SCM of Nigeria through her Literature and Publication department, leaning on Gods grace to make sure that the DSR is made available to all her readers all over the world every year. But for Gods GRACE, it would have withered away like GRASS.


The DSR first came into being in 1985. It actually succeeded the Daily Bible Devotion (DBD) which was an initial attempt by SCM Nigeria to like the Scripture Union (SU) Nigeria publish a Daily Bible Guide for Christians. The National Executive Committee (NEC) of SCM Nigeria decided to discontinue the publication of the DBD due mainly to logistical challenges in props of distribution, marketing, production costs, writing coordination, returns, and even size of the booklet.


By 1985, the then National Travelling Secretary (NTS), todays Very Rev. Godfrey Ejike Okoro decided to write and produce a much smaller version of a devotional that was much more student-friendly, costing less and with days and months based on volumes 1, 2 and 3 instead of the complete year publications. With this, the editions sold out rapidly with requests for more copies.


Like every living organism, the DSR in her decades of existence has grown in leaps and bounds. Yes, it has faced similar challenges like her parent publication the DBD but it has never witnessed discontinuation in publication at any point. It gets better by the day.


God has used His ever-ready writers of note like Prof. Kontein Trinya, Prof. Emmanuel Ibezim, Mr. Bummi Jeje, Dr. Mercy Ette, Dr.Adebayo Kolade, Barr. Leonard Ugboaja Pastor Umor Enamekere (all former National Literature and Publication coordinators of SCM) and Pastor Harold Ikewueze who became the Editor-In-Chief of the DSR between 2006 and 2016 for this writing ministry. God has ever sent His word and great has been the company that published it.


That the DSR lives on till today as the leading publication of SCM Nigeria, used by many in Nigeria, other African countries, and around the world remains a testimony of the faithfulness of God. Attempts to publish it in other languages other than English have met with dire but surmountable odds. The French language version is on the way.

The DSR is more than a devotional book as it also serves as a major driving force of the wider SCM Nigeria vision.


A mighty fortress is our God who will continue to uphold the DSR,
