This study involves discovering what information about you can be derived by analysing the way you type, with the hopes of being able to predict certain characteristics about users.
The purpose of this research is to record the time up and time down as well as the x,y and z coordinates of the device and size and location of press on the screen of each keystroke you type when copying a pre-selected passage of text, in order to analyse which letters you type fastest, in the hopes of being able to identify your name. In addition, the data will be compared to other participants to determine if a higher accuracy is achieved based on the demographic data provided (age, handedness, gender). This research is being conducted from the School of Computing Sciences, University of East Anglia (UEA) as part of my, (James Campbell - Researcher), PhD Thesis, which is supervised by Dr Oliver Buckley (UEA Lecturer).
There are 2 parts to this study. First, there are some questions about your background (specifically your name, age, handedness and gender).
Next, there is a short typing exercise, which comprises of a short passage of text to copy. This needs to be completed whilst holding the phone and not on a flat surface.
We will retain not only all the data from the questionnaire and text boxes, but also the timings of when you press and release the keys within the text boxes as well as the rotation and tilt of the device and size and location of presses on the screen.
