The Smart Atmospheric Ionizing Radiation (SAIRA) Network is a new system proving that citizen science can provide global real-time recording of the radiation exposures on flights, especially during space weather events

The system operates these detectors via a citizen science with willing volunteers to record radiation data on routes as they travel for normal purposes. The detectors connect to this application, which processes the radiation recorded and displays the data. The recorded flight data can then be uploaded to a server as part of a wider database of flight radiation measurements.

The system will provide the capability of a real-time record of the atmospheric radiation flux which can be monitored by relevant organisations to minimise the radiation risk to flights in the event of a space weather storm, as well as provide a historical record of radiation levels for individual flights, flight routes and geolocations around the Earth.

The project is run at the Surrey Space Centre, part of the University of Surrey, and is co-funded and managed by the UK Met Office, National Environmental Research Council (NERC) and the University of Reading
