Rhett A. Butler founded Mongabay.com in 1999 out of his passion for tropical forests. He called the site Mongabay after an island in Madagascar.
Since then, Mongabay has grown into the worlds most popular rainforest information site and a well-known source of environmental news reporting and analysis. Today Mongabay draws more than 2.5 million visitors per month and publishes stories in half a dozen languages. It is commonly used as an information source by mainstream media, including The Economist, Bloomberg, National Geographic, and the Associated Press. Mongabay is also widely recognized as an accurate and trust-worthy source by civil society organizations as well as development agencies.
Over the years Mongabays impact has been substantial. Articles on the site have sparked protests in Madagascar against a French shipping company transporting timber logged illegally from rainforest reserves and helped block destructive projects like a plan to log 70 percent of Woodlark Island off New Guinea for a giant oil palm plantation. Mongabay.com stories have influenced investment flows, including a decision to spare Cameroons rainforests from logging in order to win payments from the carbon market. Stories and photos have even inspired art.
In 2012 Mongabay.org was formed to facilitate the development of new education and journalism initiatives and leverage its existing network, traffic, and reputation. Mongabay.org aims to raise awareness about social and environmental issues relating to forests and other ecosystems.

Comments:
Free, yet I've never seen any ads-- and it is high quality formatting. This has a diverse selection of articles and is updated daily. I've seen instances where this app had a news story before the actual website (not sure if that was intentional). Easy and convient subject tabs and bookmarks make finding previous articles easy. Recommend for people interested in news about conservation or the environment in general.
Love the app, until it recently became unusable. If you try to open a story you have a 50/50 chance of the app crashing or getting a completely blank screen. The articles written by Mongabay are as fantastic as ever. If only it were possible to enjoy them on the app, instead of having to Google the headline to actually read the article
Fantastic content covering a wide range of conservation and environmental news topics. Easy to use. Also provides links to fascinating interviews by Mongabay Newscast (their bi-weekly podcast). It really ticks all the boxes! A 'must-have' for anyone involved or interested in conservation and environmental science.
After an initial week of issues where after the app loaded it just went to a blank page and became unresponsive it now works. Great intuitive app, and the new outlet has always been considered by me as the best place to go for important environmental news you can't always find anywhere else!
Reading offline is the most missed feature. I often go hiking to remote places and would like to read there without signal. The app could have downloaded news while i was climbing a peak and save them (like localStorage in a browser). Thanks so much!'
