The maxim of his first teacher Arie van der Plas (1952) fully made his own.
In 1981 he went to class with Maris. After a short period in which he painted with oil paint, he switched to aquarelle.

In his watercolors, Van der Plas lets 'happen'. In the unpredictable drying up of water with paint, layer over layer, lines automatically emerge. As a result, the painted object is abstracted and transparent.

Since the end of the nineties Arie has used different material for his expressive style: acrylic. Partly due to the guidance of Jacqie Vink, his works have developed in size, but especially in expressiveness and abstraction.
In recent years, Arie has been looking for a form in which abstraction and realism come together.
