This is the first in a series of five booklets prepared to help adults and school children learn to read and write the Kuteb language, spoken in Taraba State, Nigeria, and in Cameroun. The lessons in this book are carefully prepared to teach three vowels a, i, and u, and the consonants T, K, P, B, R, S, F, and final -M

The Apura Series was first published in 1974. It was based on the use of tone marking on all syllables. The present edition (2016) is based on partial tone marking, to correspond with the decision to mark only words with tonal ambiguity, Teachers will find the main point in each lesson written in small type at the bottom of each page. Teachers are strongly urged to teach writing along with reading and to encourage students to be creative in their writing.
