In the early days of Islam, there was no prescribed way of telling people that the time for Prayer had commenced nor was there any means to call the Muslims to the mosque for congregational Prayers. The Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. He sought to counsel and asked his Companions as to what should be done to call Muslims to the mosque for congregational Prayers.

The adhan is one of the most lyrical, inspiring prayers for Muslims. A prophetic tradition recounts that Prophet Muhammads companions one day were discussing how to gather everyone for prayer.

Against these traditions, Shafi'i scholars perform ijtihad with the qiyas method, as revealed in the book of Tuhfah al-Muhtaj (5/51). This book explains, that sometimes azan is recommended for other than prayer.

For example in the ears of babies born, difficult people, people faint, people angry, bad behavior either human or animal, when there is pressure from the troops, and when drowning.
